When the Special Intensive Revision's final roll came out on 23 February 2026, Tamil Nadu stood at about 5.67 crore voters — after one of the largest clean-ups of any state. Deaths, duplicates, people who'd moved to Chennai, Bengaluru or the Gulf and never updated their entry: gone. That's the roll the state voted on in 2026, and the one it'll be working from for years.

97 Lakh Names Off the Roll

A clean-up that size changes everything downstream:

• booth totals from 2021 or 2024 are meaningless now
• turnout calculated on the old roll understated real participation
• walk lists from earlier campaigns are full of people who aren't there
• city seats — Chennai especially — saw the biggest churn
• new voters added during claims are the ones nobody has a record of
• booth renumbering means old part numbers point to the wrong lists

Throw out the old file. Seriously.

Initials Are the Real Surname

Most Tamil names don't have a surname in the North Indian sense. They have an initial — usually the father's name, sometimes father's and grandfather's — in front: R. Kumar, S. Lakshmi, K. P. Senthil.

That initial is how you tell two Kumars in the same booth apart. Cheap conversions drop it, or merge it into the name, or move it to the end. We keep it exactly as printed — and sorting by initial and relative's name groups families neatly.

Tamil to Hindi Is Not Letter for Letter

Tamil script uses one letter where Hindi uses several: க covers k, kh, g and gh. So a letter-by-letter Hindi transliteration of கணேசன் comes out as "कणेसन्" — wrong. The right Hindi is गणेशन.

We transliterate by the standard spelling of the name, not letter by letter, and a person checks it. English gets the same care: Karthik, Karthick and Kaarthik don't all become different people.
