Excel voter lists

Run a Meghalaya roll through ordinary OCR and it starts "correcting" people's names.

Khasi, Garo and Jaintia names include clan names software has never seen — Lyngdoh, Kharkongor, Sangma, Marak, Nongrum — and given names that are English words, chosen by parents for their meaning or sound. Spell-check-style tools see those and "fix" them into something more familiar. Then nobody can find that voter in a search.

The Meghalaya voter list in Excel keeps every name exactly as printed: one workbook per constituency, one sheet per booth, every voter on one row, with a Hindi column added.

Names Software Wants to "Fix"

We see the same failure modes again and again:

  • Clan names split in two, or merged with the given name
  • Given names "corrected" to a near-match from a dictionary
  • Mixed Khasi and English spellings standardised wrongly
  • Long names truncated at the edge of the box

So every Meghalaya file gets a person checking names against the scan. Not glamorous. It's what makes the file searchable.

Matrilineal Clans Change How You Read a Booth

Khasi and Garo societies are matrilineal — clan names usually pass through the mother. That changes how you find households in a voter list. Sorting by surname alone won't always line families up the way it does in other states.

The fix is simple: sort by surname, then relative's name. Mothers, children and grandchildren with the same clan name come together, and the relative column shows who's linked to whom.

60 assembly constituencies, 55 of them reserved for Scheduled Tribes, and two Lok Sabha seats: Shillong and Tura.

Why does Meghalaya voter data need manual checking?

Partly. Khasi and Garo societies are matrilineal, so clan names often pass through the mother. Sort by surname and relative's name together to see households.

Does the Meghalaya voter list include phone numbers?

No. Only what's printed in the public roll: EPIC number, name, relative's name, house number, age, gender, section and part number.
