Excel voter lists

In a Maharashtra voter list, the middle name tells you more than the surname.

*Sunil Ramesh Patil.* That middle name is his father's. For a married woman — *Sunita Sunil Patil* — it's her husband's. Sort a booth by surname and middle name, and households fall into place without anyone writing a line of code. Cut the middle name off, like a lot of quick conversions do, and you've thrown away the most useful field in the file.

The Maharashtra voter list in Excel keeps every part of every name: one workbook per constituency, one sheet per booth, every voter on one row, in Marathi, English and Hindi.

The Middle Name Is the Most Useful Column in the File

What you can do with full three-part names:

  • group a booth into households in one sort
  • spot when a woman's entry still carries her father's name — a sign the record pre-dates her marriage
  • tell apart two Sunil Patils in the same lane
  • match voters to the names your workers actually use on the street

SIR 2026 Hits Mumbai Hardest

Maharashtra is in phase three of the Special Intensive Revision; the final roll was scheduled for 27 October 2026. Rural seats will see the usual clean-up — deaths, duplicates, people who moved.

Mumbai, Thane, Pune and the other big cities are a different story. Tenants move every year or two. Redevelopment pulls whole buildings' worth of voters out at once. Migrants come and go. SIR caught a lot of that — so in urban constituencies, expect big differences between the 2024 roll and the 2026 one. Plan on the new roll, especially for city wards.

ळ and Other Things Hindi OCR Can't Read

Marathi is written in Devanagari, so people assume a Hindi tool will handle it. Close — but not close enough.

ळ (the retroflex "la") isn't in Hindi. Hindi-trained OCR reads it as ल or drops it. *कोळी* becomes *कोली*. Marathi also uses ऱ and its own spellings that Hindi models "correct". We use OCR set up for Marathi and a person checks the names.

Frequently asked questions

How can I get the Maharashtra voter list in Excel?

The Chief Electoral Officer, Maharashtra publishes the roll only as PDFs, one per booth. Setuk.org provides the SIR 2026 roll in Excel, one workbook per assembly constituency and one sheet per booth, with names in Marathi, English and Hindi.

When is the Maharashtra SIR final roll?

The final roll under phase three of the Special Intensive Revision was scheduled for 27 October 2026, with 1 October 2026 as the qualifying date.

How many constituencies are there in Maharashtra?

288 assembly constituencies (234 General, 29 SC, 25 ST) and 48 Lok Sabha constituencies – the second-largest state on both counts.

Why are Marathi names three parts long?

Marathi names usually follow given name, father's or husband's name, then surname – for example Sunil Ramesh Patil. The middle name tells you whose household a voter belongs to, so we keep all three parts.

How do Marathi rolls handle the letter ळ?

ळ (ḷa) doesn't exist in Hindi. We keep it in the Marathi column, write it as "l" in English, and use ळ in the Hindi column too, so names like कोळी stay readable.

Does the Maharashtra voter list include phone numbers?

No. Only what's printed in the public roll: EPIC number, name, relative's name, house number, age, gender, section and part number.
